How I take care of my plants

Those who know me, know that I love plants and work on converting my balcony into a garden.
People who are interested in gardening know the importance of good soil. So, the answer of the most frequent question I get: “how do I take care of them?” is very simple; Keep soil healthy.
How to do that? Or how to make ordinary soil rich?

There are two approaches I follow: quick and slow.

Quick compost

Its ingredients are:
  1. Eggshells: collect, dry and smash them (you can use mixer here but I don’t). They contain calcium which helps your plants to grow.

2. Coffee dregs: all what remain in your coffee mug work. In case you drink it with sugar it’s helpless, because sugar burns roots.

3.Tea: after drinking your favorite drink, open tea bag, and extract its content.

4.Mix these with soil you have, then start planting. When you water the plants, all the nutritional elements dissolve, roots absorb, and your plants become healthier.

Slow compost

This one needs more effort and time. It doesn’t just help your garden but also the environment around us. It’s about recycling and here’s the way to do that:
  1. Equal amounts of organic waste and dry leaves are mixed together. Organic food waste contains apples, oranges and bananas peels, etc. Organic waste includes Nitrogen and Dry Leaves contain Carbon.
  2. You can add previous mixture to this one (I mean quick compost).
  3. They are put in a closed container to hide them from sun (mine is made of metal).
  4. You have to give them a turn from time to time (I do this weekly).
  5. Speed of breaking down varies between summer and winter depending on heat and humidity.
  6. To speed the process up, I sometimes add some milk but you don’t have to.

For detailed explanation, watch this video and related ones. They helped me a lot.

The result of these efforts is a beautiful refreshing balcony when you are in need of relaxation.
